"Big news: disaster food stamps are available to individuals and households who were impacted by Hurricane Helene.
The application window is incredibly short: 10/18/24 thru 10/24/24.
Given this short window, please share information about this program to your clients and contacts ASAP. Some key points below:
- How to apply:
- By phone starting 10/18 by calling 1-844-453-1117
- 8am-4pm M-F; 9am-noon Sat & Sun.
- Online "preregistration" is open now at https://epass.nc.
gov/ - Those that preregister will still have to call to have a telephone interview.
- In person starting 10/18 at the sites listed here: ncdhhs.gov/dsnap
- 8am-4pm M-F; 9am-2pm Sat & Sun
- By phone starting 10/18 by calling 1-844-453-1117
- The eligibility criteria are much broader than traditional food stamps, so folks should be encouraged to apply, even if they've been denied or disqualified from food stamps in the past.
- There is NO citizenship or immigration status requirement.
- The benefits are generous.
- An eligible individual should get $292; an eligible household of four should get $975.
- Current food stamps recipients are not eligible for and do not need to apply for DSNAP. They will hopefully get automatic supplements to bring their benefits up to the max for their household size (we're awaiting confirmation of this from the state).
