Hurricane Helene Debris Removal: What You Need to Know

Debris removal efforts in McDowell County will begin shortly, and you will start seeing trucks and equipment sweeping through all communities—not just city limits—to pick up debris placed within 10 feet of the right of way. This service, provided at no charge, is part of the county's cleanup efforts in response to Hurricane Helene. Crews will make multiple passes through each area, so if you see them pick up debris but still have more to place out, don’t worry, they will return. Please ensure that debris is separated according to FEMA guidelines and placed properly near the curb, without blocking the roadway or access to your property. If you are unable to move debris from your property to the right of way, contact the Helene Hotline at 828-652-3241, and we will connect you with volunteer organizations to assist you. Safety remains a priority, so please avoid placing debris near utility lines, poles, or fire hydrants.

Debris removal teams will prioritize heavily impacted communities first, with efforts expanding into other areas as they finish or as additional resources become available. Rest assured that every community in McDowell County will receive this service as soon as possible. This debris removal operation will continue for many weeks and potentially even months as we work together to recover and clean up following Hurricane Helene. Please be patient as crews work diligently to cover all areas, ensuring that no community is left behind during this process.

BRIDGE Crew Restores Water Service and Supports Recovery Efforts

This week, the BRIDGE crew played a crucial role in restoring water service to a small community in McDowell County. The crew worked tirelessly to dig out a spring head for an elderly resident, a task that ultimately restored water service to multiple homes in the area. In addition to this project, the BRIDGE team has partnered with McDowell County Emergency Management to tackle several urgent needs for residents impacted by Hurricane Helene.

BRIDGE, which stands for Building, Rehabilitating, Instructing, Developing, Growing, Employing, is a program from the North Carolina Forest Service.
