Emergency Management Conducts Waterway Assessments Following Hurricane Helene
McDowell County Emergency Management, in collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), has conducted comprehensive waterway assessments to identify hazardous debris in and along our rivers and streams. All major waterways in the county have been evaluated. Work continues to identify debris in tributaries. This program, administered under the guidance of FEMA and USACE, involves a meticulous process to assess and determine eligibility for removal, ensuring compliance with federal guidelines. The devastation caused by Hurricane Helene generated significant debris impacting both public and private properties across McDowell County. We recognize that the removal process will be extensive and appreciate the continued patience and cooperation of our community as we work together to restore and rehabilitate our waterways and neighborhoods. Updates on this critical effort will be shared as new information becomes available.
